The Sanskrit name Sarkara was given for sugar by Indians about 2400 years ago. The nature has taken care that we have been able to enjoy sweet flavours already for thousands of years. Sugar has been called also “white gold”, and with good reason.
The refining of sugar was started in Finland in Turku after the middle of the18th century. The origin of Suomen Sokeri (Finland’s Sugar) is timed in 1918, when six sugar factories were combined as Finska Socker AB.
Sugar is also the raw material in brewing industry. So the fact is that we have this refined “white gold” almost in everything we eat and drink.
